Name: - Scott M. Day <SDay@sdslink.com> - Greetings fellow sailing aficionados, I am a new resident of the Metro D.C., MD, DE area transplanted from Chesapeake, VA (where I had to give up my boat) and prior to that Maine where I had to give up heaven. If there are ANY sailors in the area that need help traveling up and down the East Coast (especially from D.C. to Norfolk/Va. Beach ), getting the boat ready for the season, or figuring out a navigation plan PLEASE get in touch. We are a younger professional married couple - she can cook like crazy, but I would like her to get more experience offshore. I have navigated Maine, VA/MD, and Europe and I'm not afraid of grabbing the helm in a gale. Wk:(703)553-7554/Hm:(703)924-2107 - Email: SDay@sdslink.com or Cyberskot@earthlink.net

Name: - Kanani <usskanani> SOUTH PACIFIC My wife Kathy and I have sailed 80,000 miles since 1984. We spent most of our time in the South Pacific Islands, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. We sailed around the world from 1994-1997. After much reflection we have decided that the South Pacific is our personal favorite. Reflecting back on the many good times and beautiful and amazing places that we have been, my thoughts always go back to the simpelest and least complicated places. I think of the great times that we have enjoyed on the fascinating and historic island of Palmyra. For all of it’s legends and all of it’s tales of woe, it is still one of the most spectacular spots on earth. I think of some of the more primitive islands of Tonga and Fiji with their unique culture and wonderful people. Name: - Jim Burge <jburge@as.arizona.edu> For many years it has been my dream to live on a sailboat with my family and travel to beautiful and interesting places. With this distant dream, we have been saving money for years to buy a sailboat. We finally have enough money to be convinced that this is really possible -- not just a crazy dream! So where do I start? I grew up sailing little boats on little lakes. I have bareboat chartered 40-ft boats and handled some exciting conditions in the Bahamas and the Channel Islands. On one-week charters, I have had little interaction with the cruising community. Mostly, I have vicariously enjoyed the travels of the Pardeys, Tristan Jones, Jack London, and many families in Cruising World. Since we live in Tucson, AZ, my children have not had much experience at sea. We have mostly put our money in the bank for our own boat, rather than spend it on outrageous charter fees. Probably in the next 2 years, we will buy a boat with the goal of moving aboard. Our children are now 5 and 7 years old, so I think they will be ready as soon as we are to take the plunge. We really need some cruising experience and we need to learn just what it is we want in a boat before we commit to buying one that will become our home. I teach at the University of Arizona and I was hoping to take vacation with my family over spring break (mid March) and spend some time with real live cruisers. Ideally, we would rent a sailboat and live aboard for a week and learn from others. So, please circulate this. We are a family of four, looking for cruising experience. We will be thankful for any opportunities. Jim and Laura Burge 3451 N. Plaza del Haciendas Tucson, AZ 85750 520-886-7646 (phone and fax) jburge@as.arizona.edu

Thank you for your help and interest in my brother and sister-in-law Nick and Sheelagh Lowes. I had a message today to say that they were heading for Raratonga on board the Sultan of Brunei's yacht! I understand the current caretaker returned to Anchorage after the hurricane season and so there was no excuse for them to stay. I hope they will be allowed to stay somewhere round there to start their life again as I don't think Nick could ever live in this climate again! Thank you to everyone for their efforts Pippa Swabby

Adam, the Red Baron is out flying. I can help you too. Yes they let you fly in a Discovery Flight. Just not land. Yesthey charge for these flights, Some youth programs may exist in your area which work with F.B.O.'s to promote young pilots. Purchase a book published by the Federal Aviation Administration "Rules and Regulations". To discover the current rules for obtaining a Private Pilot Certificate. Good luck! Snoopy the Dog
Thanks Red Barron, but I have some questions about these discovery flights. Right from the start they let you fly for 30-60 minutes? or just let you meet the instructor and watch him. And do these cost money. Also, what are the requirements for obtaining a license? Adam <abc@i-2000.com>
Adam, your best bet for flight instruction in your area of New York, would be to contact the nearest Community Airport (yellow pages) and call all Fight Schools listed. Ask if they offer "Discovery Flights". If hey do schedule one with "EACH" of the flight Schools. Discovery Flights are 30 to 60 minute flights, to let you get the feel of flying, and more important flying with all flight schools, allow you to meet a variety of flight instructors and there aircraft. It will be worth the extra hundred or so dollars to end up in a very comfortable environment. So many students drop out due to incompatibility of personalities. Blue skies and good luck. The Red Baron
Hello, I am interested in obtaining a non-commercial Piolts' licence. If any have any infoor comments please let me know Adam <abc@i-2000.com>

And Then theres this. What a life, (Hi Pilgrim's.) Massage 1 from Pippa Hanbury This is a complete shot in the dark - new to surfing the web and a landlubber form England! My brother and his wife have shipwrecked themselves in the Cook Islands - I am searching for a way to inform passing sailors that he is there! We would love some way of keeping vaguely in touch. They shipwrecked on 16 th March and it was almost 8 weeks before news got back to us! Sadly it seems they have lost almost everything except each other! But they want to stay put and carry on Tom Neale's work of guardians of the island! Very rare breed my brother! Anyway it would be great if you have any ideas at all! They don't even have a radio never mind a computer! Any suggestions as to where I address enquiries would be gratefully received. Massage 2 from Pippa Hanbury Thank you for your help. I will put the wheels in motion. I understand a thing called packet radio flashes messages across the world. My sister managed to speak to them this morning from some yacht that happened to be passing. The details are as follows:- Nick and Sheelagh Lowes the Yacht was "Short Time". It seems that they managed to find their way to Anchorage Island (11 hours rowing from the wreck) and have survived on coconuts and fish and eggs from chickens left behind from previous inhabitants. The most famous of course being the hermit and author Tom Neale who Nick visited shortly before his death in 1976 (I think) I understand they are trying to remain there as caretakers having lost everything with the yacht which was their home - but the lack of supplies is the major problem. 5 chicks hatched out yesterday from the hens on the Island! If anyone is passing and could take supplies they would be sure of a warm welcome and we can arrange reimbursement quite easily.
